Leh, May 19 : The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, sterilised and vaccinated 131 stray dogs against rabies during a four-day Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies (ABC&AR) camp conducted at the Military Stations in Kharu between May 11 and May 14, officials said on Monday.
The drive was carried out by the department’s ABC&AR team comprising veterinarians, para-veterinary personnel and trained animal handlers as part of ongoing efforts to manage the stray dog population and contain the spread of rabies in the region.
Officials said the camp was organised in coordination with military authorities stationed at Kharu to ensure smooth implementation of the programme and effective coverage in the area.
The initiative focused on sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination as preventive measures aimed at improving public health safety and reducing risks associated with increasing stray dog populations.
According to the department, the campaign forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen animal health management and undertake humane population control measures in urban and semi-urban areas of Leh district.
The authorities stated that similar programmes would continue in a phased manner in other parts of the district as part of sustained efforts to address public health concerns linked to stray animals and rabies prevention.
