Amaravati, Aug 2: APCC chief YS Sharmila on Sunday demanded immediate rehabilitation for people displaced by the Godavari River floods, alleging that the TDP-led government was focused on praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi rather than addressing the plight of flood-hit families.

Stating that over 20,000 people have been displaced by the floods, she accused the government of failing to provide immediate rehabilitation and relief measures despite warnings of inundation.

“The government has not shown the same level of concern for the people affected by floods in the Godavari River as it has shown in praising PM Modi. Entire villages are submerged, thousands have lost everything, and nearly 100 villages are living under the shadow of floods,” Sharmila said in a press release.

Questioning the government’s preparedness, she asked why people from vulnerable villages were not shifted to safer places in advance and why Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) packages were not provided despite prior knowledge of likely submergence.

Sharmila questioned the NDA coalition government’s priorities, saying it appeared more concerned about criticism of PM Modi than the plight of flood victims.

She asked whether those who were upset by criticism of PM Modi did not feel the pain of displaced families or hear the cries of people forced to flee their submerged villages.

The APCC chief urged the government to support flood-affected families until the flood situation eased by providing rehabilitation, food, essential commodities and medical services at relief centres.

She also sought special care for children and pregnant women and demanded immediate implementation of the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) package for residents of Polavaram submergence villages, along with their relocation to safer places with better facilities.
