Leh, Mar 25: The ASMITA League 2026 commenced on Tuesday at the NDS Ice Hockey Stadium in Leh, marking the beginning of a multi-discipline winter sports event aimed at expanding women’s participation across Ladakh.
The opening ceremony was attended by Administrative Secretary for Youth Services and Sports, Moses Kunzang, who served as the Chief Guest. The event witnessed the presence of senior officials and representatives from the sports fraternity, including Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, JKAS, Chief Conservator of Forests, and Tsering Tashi, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Leh. Members of the Ice Hockey Association of Ladakh were also in attendance.
The league has drawn participation from six teams, with four representing Leh district and two from Kargil district. Beyond ice hockey, the competition includes figure skating and speed skating events, broadening the scope of winter sports engagement for women athletes in the region.
On the opening day, Kharu Falcons edged past Sham Eagles with a 1–0 victory in a closely contested match. In another fixture, Lalok delivered a commanding performance against SECMOL, registering a 6–1 win in the inaugural encounter.
Further matches scheduled later in the day include Kharu Falcons facing Lalok at 3:00 PM, followed by SECMOL taking on Shakar Chiktan Queens at 5:00 PM.
The ASMITA League is part of a broader effort to encourage women’s involvement in ice-based sports, offering a structured platform for competition and skill development. The initiative reflects ongoing attempts to nurture talent and enhance the presence of women athletes in winter sports disciplines across Ladakh.
With competitive fixtures and participation from multiple districts, the league is expected to draw attention to the growing interest in women’s ice sports in the region.
