Leh, Feb 24: The Hung Club Culture Welfare Society on Monday concluded its Winter Music Workshop on the traditional Kopong, a Tibetan lute, with a closing ceremony held at Phyang village in Leh district.
The event was attended by BJP State President Tashi Gyaltsan Khachu as the Chief Guest. Addressing participants and guests, Khachu commended the society for its sustained efforts to preserve the region’s musical heritage while offering a constructive platform for youth engagement during the winter break.
The workshop focused on training young participants in playing the Kopong, a traditional string instrument central to Himalayan folk music.
Students presented live performances during the ceremony, demonstrating the skills acquired through the intensive training programme. The recital drew appreciation from the gathering and highlighted the growing interest among local youth in traditional art forms.
In his address, Khachu noted that initiatives centred on music and the arts can serve as effective avenues for channelising the energy of young people in a positive direction. He underlined the role of cultural engagement in steering youth away from social challenges, including substance abuse, and reiterated his support for programmes that promote Ladakh’s cultural identity.
Organisers described the workshop as part of their ongoing efforts to safeguard indigenous traditions while fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the younger generation. The society said it intends to continue similar programmes aimed at strengthening community ties through cultural education.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks to participants, trainers and community members who contributed to the success of the winter workshop.
