NUBRA: World Environment Day was observed at Lamdon Model School, Diskit, on Friday with Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal, calling for sustained public commitment towards environmental conservation and responsible resource use in the ecologically sensitive region.
The programme, organised by the Block Development Office (BDO), Diskit, brought together government officials, educators and students to promote awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living. Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, the Deputy Commissioner underscored Nubra’s ecological fragility and growing prominence as a tourist destination, stressing that preserving the region’s natural heritage is a collective responsibility.
He noted that while the people of Nubra are privileged to live amidst pristine landscapes, safeguarding the environment requires consistent action beyond ceremonial observances. Emphasising the need to integrate environmental consciousness into daily life, he urged citizens to contribute towards cleanliness, water conservation and the prudent use of electricity.
The Deputy Commissioner also raised concerns over drug abuse, highlighting the critical role of teachers in educating students about its adverse consequences and guiding them towards informed and responsible choices.
The event commenced with a welcome address by the school Principal, followed by a student skit centred on environmental conservation. An environmental pledge was subsequently administered to participants, reaffirming their commitment to protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable practices.
A plantation drive was also conducted as part of the celebrations. Heads of Departments and officials from various government departments attended the programme, which concluded with a vote of thanks acknowledging the contribution of all participants towards the successful observance of World Environment Day.
