KHARU: The formal handover of newly completed watershed assets to local residents emerged as the focal point of the Watershed Mahotsav celebrated on Tuesday at Micro Watershed Chemday under Kharu Project WDC–03 and Micro Watershed Saspol under Project WDC–06. The event showcased a united community embracing responsibility for the upkeep of water and livelihood infrastructure.

Large public participation marked the celebrations at both venues. In Saspol, SDM Gurmet led the proceedings, joined by the Tehsildar, Watershed Department officials, Micro Watershed Committee representatives, Nambardar, religious head, SHG and UG members, along with teachers and students of the Higher Secondary School. At Kharu, officers and residents turned out in strength, reflecting widespread engagement.

Speakers applauded the Watershed Department for interventions that are reshaping agricultural prospects. The works highlighted included construction of water harvesting tanks, compound walling and L-bench terracing to revive wasteland through plantation. Spring rejuvenation, improvement of primary irrigation channels via I-khuls, establishment of polycarbonate greenhouses, food processing units at Saspol and Chemday, handloom weaving support and distribution of pea seeds, fodder seeds and tool kits to every household have boosted rural productivity.

Officials at both locations credited the Government of India’s continued support for driving rural development across Ladakh. Students delivered an awareness quiz titled “Khet ka paani khet mein, gaon ka paani gaon mein,” promoting conservation of local water resources.

Project Officer and Nodal Officer IWMP Leh, Shenaz, presented a brief account of achievements under NRM, production and livelihood components while stressing Janbhagidari as the backbone for sustaining community assets.

Villagers voiced satisfaction with the progress and called for continued momentum. Students were awarded prizes and refreshments for their participation.

The Mahotsav concluded with on-spot Lokarpan of completed facilities placing control directly in the hands of the community, followed by Bhumi Pujan of forthcoming works performed by the religious head Lamaji, marking the start of the next phase in watershed development for Chemday and Saspol.
