Srinagar, Oct 4: The Uri National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir will remain temporarily closed on October 4 and October 11 to facilitate hill-cutting work by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), officials said.
According to an order issued by Uri Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prince Kumar, the highway will be closed on the two Sundays to allow the 53 Road Construction Company (RCC) of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) to carry out the required hill-cutting work.
The temporary closure was approved following a request from the Officer Commanding, 53 RCC, submitted through a letter dated September 11 and subsequent communications seeking road closure for the work.
The administration has advised commuters, the general public and transport operators to use the Bandi–Paranpillan–Dachi route as an alternative during the closure period.
The order further stated that no hill-cutting activity will be carried out on government working days between 9 am and 10:30 am and 3:30 pm and 5 pm. During these hours, the executing agency has been directed to keep the highway open to ensure smooth movement of vehicles.
The BRO has also been instructed to implement all necessary safety measures to protect commuters and other road users during the hill-cutting operation.
The order, issued on October 3, was forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Officer Commanding 53 RCC at Mohura under Project BEACON, and Uri Sub-Divisional Police Officer for information and necessary coordination.
