Leh, Jul 02: As part of a journey that merges endurance with remembrance, a team of Indian Army cyclists riding from Siachen Base Camp to the Kargil War Memorial received a heartfelt welcome at the University of Ladakh’s Leh campus on Monday.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Satish Yadav and accompanied by Lieutenant Shivanshu Debrani, the 20-member team was greeted with traditional Khataks—white ceremonial scarves offered as a mark of honour—by students and faculty during an interactive gathering at the university’s conference hall.
The cyclists’ route includes the treacherous ascent of Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. Their mission is not just a test of physical strength, but a tribute to the courage of soldiers who fought during the Kargil conflict.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Subrat Sharma, Dean of Research, applauded the spirit of the riders and noted that their journey speaks to qualities of resilience and national pride. He emphasized the shared values between the Army and academia, citing the university’s ongoing engagement with Fire and Fury Corps through a formal academic and cultural partnership.
“Their determination echoes the spirit of those we remember at Kargil. For our students, this is a living example of service beyond self,” Dr. Sharma said.
Lieutenant Colonel Yadav responded with gratitude, reflecting on the power of civilian support. “The encouragement we’ve received here fuels our journey,” he said. “To see such respect from the youth reaffirms our belief in the strength of our people.”
The visit not only bridged a connection between the armed forces and the student body, but also served as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Kargil War and the unity it continues to inspire.
As the team pedals onward to Drass, they carry with them more than just gear—they bear the gratitude of a nation and the cheers of young citizens inspired by their mission.
