NEW DELHI, JUNE 11: Three Indian seafarers aboard the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello, who were earlier reported missing following a US military strike off the coast of Oman, have now been confirmed dead after their bodies were located and identified, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday.
Describing the incident as a “deeply unfortunate” tragedy, Sonowal said the loss is a “profound blow to the maritime community.” He added that the government stands with the bereaved families and is committed to providing full support.
According to the minister, officials have been directed to ensure the swift repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased and the return of the rescued crew members to India.
The incident occurred after the vessel was struck during a US military operation in the Gulf of Oman, initially leaving three Indian crew members unaccounted for. Of the 24 Indians on board, 21 were rescued, while the missing seafarers were later confirmed dead after recovery and identification of bodies.
