Leh, May 05 : The National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), Leh, has begun a free Sowa-Rigpa consultation programme at Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Hospital, offering diagnosis and medicines to the public as part of a healthcare outreach linked to the ongoing exposition of holy relics in the region.
The programme, which commenced on May 2 and will continue till May 14, has been designed to cater to residents, devotees and visitors attending the spiritual event, with a team of trained Sowa-Rigpa physicians deployed for the initiative, according to the official press release.
Officials said the camp is aimed at strengthening access to traditional healthcare services while promoting preventive care. Free consultations, clinical assessment and medicines are being provided to beneficiaries during the period, with an emphasis on holistic treatment practices.
Sowa-Rigpa, commonly known as the Amchi system of medicine, is an established traditional healing system rooted in Himalayan Buddhist culture. It is based on principles that focus on maintaining balance between body, mind and environment, and continues to be practised across the trans-Himalayan region.
The institute stated that aligning the healthcare initiative with a major spiritual gathering was intended to enhance public outreach and create wider awareness about indigenous systems of medicine. The programme also seeks to extend the benefits of Sowa-Rigpa to a broader population segment, particularly those attending the exposition.
Officials further noted that the initiative reflects the institute’s ongoing efforts to integrate traditional knowledge systems with contemporary healthcare delivery, while reinforcing the link between cultural heritage and community well-being.
