New Delhi, Jul 16: Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk has refused to end his indefinite hunger strike despite repeated appeals from political leaders, supporters and well-wishers, saying doing so without any response from the government would send the wrong message.
Speaking in a video message released late Wednesday, the 18th day of his fast, Wangchuk said ending the protest prematurely would signal that governments need not be held accountable.
“If I eat, what message will go? The message to the government will be that there is no need for accountability. Protesters sit and leave,” he said, questioning what would change if he called off the hunger strike.
Instead of urging him to end his fast, Wangchuk appealed to people to strengthen the proposed “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, calling on students, youth and citizens to participate in large numbers.
He said schools, colleges and universities should treat the day as an opportunity for “experiential education” under the National Education Policy, allowing students to witness democracy and political participation firsthand.
Addressing concerns over his health, Wangchuk said medical examinations, including an ECG, had not shown any immediate danger despite 18 days without food.
“My condition is not such that I will die in two-four days. Many medical tests have been conducted and the results are quite normal for an 18-day fast. Yes, there is weakness and my muscles are getting weak, but my heart and core are still fine,” he said, adding that he could continue the fast for several more days.
He urged supporters to register for the July 20 march through the campaign’s website or missed-call initiative and participate in large numbers.
“Come in thousands on July 20. Together, we will hand over this issue to Parliament. Then I will believe that it has gone into the right hands,” Wangchuk said.
Wangchuk’s appeal comes amid growing concern over his health as he continues his indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar, where he has been demanding action from the Centre. Several political leaders and supporters have appealed to him to end the fast, while petitions have also been moved before the court seeking intervention.
