Small Water Bottles, Snack Packets Banned on Manimahesh Yatra Route to Protect Environment

SHIMLA, Aug 7: The sale of small water bottles, snack packets, cigarettes and other tobacco products has been banned along the Manimahesh Yatra route in Himachal Pradesh to protect the ecologically sensitive region, officials said on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of Chamba, Mukesh Repswal, along with other officials, inspected facilities for pilgrims from Hadsar village to Dal Lake at Manimahesh and directed shopkeepers to cooperate in conserving the fragile environment.

The Manimahesh Kailash peak, situated at an altitude of 18,547 feet in Chamba district, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The annual pilgrimage includes a 14-km trek from Hadsar to Dal Lake.

The yatra will officially commence on August 17 and conclude at the end of September. At present, around 60 pilgrims and trekkers are undertaking the journey daily.

During the inspection, Repswal reviewed security arrangements, drinking water facilities, halting points, sanitation measures and waste management, directing concerned departments to ensure improved facilities for pilgrims.

He said the sale of small-sized water bottles and snack packets has been prohibited to reduce plastic waste, while bidis, cigarettes and other tobacco products have also been banned throughout the pilgrimage route.

The Deputy Commissioner urged shopkeepers to strictly adhere to the restrictions in view of the region’s fragile ecosystem and the need to preserve the natural heritage of the Manimahesh Valley.

The initiative aims to minimise plastic pollution, protect local biodiversity and ensure a clean, safe and eco-friendly environment for devotees.

Officials said that except on the two peak pilgrimage days—September 4 and September 19—around 5,000 pilgrims will be allowed to undertake the yatra each day, subject to weather conditions.

Following the deaths of 15 people due to heavy rains along the circumambulation route last year, the Manimahesh Trust has decided to keep the route closed for pilgrims from outside Himachal Pradesh. However, pilgrims from Lahaul travelling via the traditional parikrama route, residents of Kugti village and those accompanied by experienced guides will be permitted.

Officials also said that registration has been made mandatory for all pilgrims undertaking this year’s Manimahesh Yatra.
