Leh, Feb 12: A six-day community engagement and environmental awareness campaign aimed at reducing plastic use and improving waste handling practices concluded on Tuesday at Martselang village in Kharu Sub Division.
The campaign was organised by CII Foundation, supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan, in collaboration with the Block Development Office (RDD) Kharu and LREDA.
The closing programme was held at Martselang village.
Officials said the campaign focused on reducing plastic pollution, promoting reusable alternatives and strengthening source-level waste segregation in villages.
Around 900 cloth bags were distributed to households and community members during the programme to encourage a shift away from single-use plastic carry bags. Awareness sessions were also conducted on household waste segregation and the need to keep common and public areas clean.
The concluding session was attended by Ms. Kunzang, Block Development Officer, Kharu Sub Division, who urged villagers to take shared responsibility for environmental protection and waste management at the local level.
Representatives of the CII Foundation reiterated their support to local efforts aimed at reducing waste generation and improving village-level waste practices in Ladakh.
Officials said the six-day drive covered six villages of the sub division and included capacity-building activities, community meetings and awareness programmes linked to improved waste management infrastructure.
Organisers also said the campaign followed the same practices it promoted, with the use of reusable items and by avoiding disposable cups and plates during field activities and community events.
Residents of the participating villages welcomed the initiative and appreciated the support for improving cleanliness and environmental awareness in their localities.
The campaign is expected to support the creation of cleaner and more sustainable village communities in Kharu Sub Division of Leh district.
