Leh, Jul 29: Travelers passing through Kushok Bakula Rinpoche (KBR) Airport in Leh will now get a taste of Ladakh’s rich culture and craftsmanship, with the launch of a dedicated Self-Help Group (SHG) kiosk aimed at promoting locally made products.
The kiosk, inaugurated today, is the result of a joint effort by the Ladakh Rural Livelihood Mission (LRLM), the Social Welfare Department, and the Legal Service Authority of Ladakh. It offers a direct platform for women-led SHGs to showcase and sell their handmade goods to tourists and visitors transiting through the region’s busiest airport.
Located at a high-altitude travel hub that connects Ladakh to major Indian cities, the kiosk is expected to strengthen the market presence of rural artisans and boost income opportunities for women in remote areas. Products available at the outlet include traditional crafts, local food items, textiles, and eco-friendly goods — all produced by SHGs under the LRLM umbrella.
According to officials involved in the project, the move not only offers a market platform to these groups but also gives travelers a chance to carry a piece of Ladakh with them while supporting local livelihoods.
“Such efforts help rural women earn a sustainable income, build confidence, and become more financially independent,” said one LRLM representative present at the inauguration.
The idea behind placing the kiosk at KBR Airport is rooted in its status as a tourism gateway. With growing footfall throughout the year, the airport provides a perfect stage for local artisans to reach a wider audience without leaving their homeland.
For many travelers, this new kiosk offers more than just a shopping option — it’s a window into the lives and skills of Ladakhi women, whose products tell stories of culture, resilience, and community effort.
As the initiative takes off, local authorities are hopeful it will inspire more rural producers to join the network and turn local talent into a lasting economic opportunity.
