Bhopal, Oct 3: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that once the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is fully implemented, criminal cases could be disposed of within three years, from the registration of an FIR to proceedings before the Supreme Court.
Shah made the remarks while addressing a state-level conference of cattle rearers in Bhopal after inaugurating an exhibition on the new criminal laws.
He said the criminal justice system in India had historically been associated with delays, but reforms introduced through the new criminal laws were aimed at making the process faster and more efficient.
“I have come especially to tell the people and the youth that after about one and a half years, once the new criminal law is fully implemented, any case, from the filing of an FIR to the Supreme Court, will be disposed of within three years,” Shah said.
He said the criminal laws introduced during British rule were framed primarily to protect the colonial government and its interests.
According to Shah, the new criminal laws have been introduced with the objective of protecting citizens’ dignity, with justice at their core. He said punishment would be imposed where necessary to deter criminal activity.
Shah said that after the complete implementation of the BNS, India’s criminal justice system would become among the most modern in the world.
Addressing the gathering of cattle rearers, he said the large participation was a positive sign for the growth of the dairy sector in Madhya Pradesh.
The Union minister also criticised the Congress, claiming that demands for a separate ministry dealing with cooperation had continued for decades but were not fulfilled during its tenure.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi established a separate Ministry of Cooperation after assuming office, adding that cattle rearers would be among those who could benefit from the cooperative sector.
Shah also highlighted the growth in India’s milk production. He said milk output increased from around 14.7 crore tonnes in 2014-15 to about 25 crore tonnes over the subsequent decade.
He said efforts were also being made to improve cattle breeds through modern technology and strengthen measures to prevent diseases among livestock.
Shah further criticised the Congress, accusing it of spreading “negativity”, while saying that the Modi government had worked to advance India across various sectors.
He said Prime Minister Modi had set a goal of making India the world’s leading country across sectors by August 15, 2047.
