Leh, May 13 : The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Leh, on Tuesday concluded its first-ever Annual Sports Meet with a valedictory function at the Stakna campus, marking a notable moment in the institution’s academic and extracurricular calendar since its establishment.
The week-long sports event, which began on May 5, witnessed participation from nearly 40 students enrolled in Ph.D, B.Sc. Agriculture, Basic Agriculture Training (BAT) and Basic Horticulture Training (BHT) programmes, with competitions held across multiple disciplines including cricket, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, carrom and athletics.
Associate Director (Research and Extension) and Dean, SAS&T, University of Ladakh, Stakna, Leh, Prof. Dorjay Namgyal, who attended the valedictory ceremony as Chief Guest, commended the students for their enthusiastic participation and underlined the importance of maintaining a balance between academics and sports for overall development.
He said co-curricular activities play a vital role in promoting discipline, reducing stress and encouraging healthy lifestyles among students, adding that sporting activities contribute to both physical fitness and mental well-being alongside academic learning.
Prof. M. S. Kanwar, Coordinator B.Sc., and Prof. Deldan Namgail, Coordinator BHT, attended the function as Guests of Honour. The programme was also attended by faculty members, non-teaching staff and students from various academic programmes of the institution.
The valedictory function featured the distribution of medals and certificates to winners and runners-up across different events. Dr. Shamim Ali presented an overview of the sports meet and highlighted the level of student engagement and organisational efforts behind the successful conduct of the inaugural edition.
Officials said the event was conceived to promote sports culture and encourage greater student participation in extracurricular activities within the campus community.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Thanlas Norboo acknowledged the contribution of the organising committee, faculty members, students and participants for ensuring the successful conduct of the event and making the institute’s maiden Annual Sports Meet a memorable occasion.
The sports meet is being viewed as an effort by the institution to strengthen campus life and foster a culture of holistic education at a time when higher educational institutions in Ladakh are increasingly focusing on student wellness and co-curricular engagement alongside academic training.
