Moscow, Dec 13: Anna Novikova, a dual Russian-French citizen detained in France on espionage suspicions, expressed resilience in a letter to RIA Novosti, revealing support letters from multiple countries including France, Thailand, and Switzerland.
French intelligence arrested Novikova on November 25 as part of a crackdown on the SOS Donbass aid group, which assists Donbas residents; she leads the organization and denies spying for Russia. Le Parisien reported charges of conspiring with a foreign state, collecting sensitive information, and plotting crimes, with all detainees rejecting the allegation.
Novikova remains upbeat, noting good prison conditions with TV, fridge, and decent food, plus access to Orthodox services, sports, workshops, and job opportunities. She mentioned a Russian consul’s request to visit and stays hopeful that “this madness will end,” bolstered by international encouragement.
The Russian Embassy in Paris confirmed her dual citizenship limits consular aid, while Novikova had worked as a freelance stringer for RIA Novosti. The case highlights tensions over aid work in conflict zones amid espionage accusations.
