Dr. Jaffer reaffirms push for sports infrastructure
KARGIL: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon on Tuesday reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and expanding opportunities for youth while attending the final match and closing ceremony of the District Police Kargil Civic Action Programme (CAP) Sports Event 2026 at the Futsal Ground, Baroo.
The event, organised by District Police Kargil to promote sportsmanship, youth engagement and positive community participation, concluded with RLC Baroo registering a dominant 9-1 victory over Poyen in the final football match to lift the title.
Addressing players, officials and spectators, Dr. Akhoon lauded the efforts of Ladakh Police, particularly under the leadership of SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav, for organising the sports event and providing a constructive platform for young talent. He said sports play a crucial role in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, discipline, teamwork and leadership qualities among youth.
Highlighting the growing career prospects in the sports sector, the CEC encouraged students and players to actively participate in sporting activities, noting that opportunities through sports quotas and competitive events at national and international levels continue to expand.
Dr. Akhoon said the Administration and LAHDC Kargil are working towards developing modern sports infrastructure across the district and informed the gathering that the Chilling Ice Rink is expected to become operational soon, opening new avenues for winter sports enthusiasts.
He also noted that several athletes from Ladakh have represented the region at national and international platforms and urged young sportspersons to draw inspiration from their achievements. Reiterating the Council’s focus on transparency and merit-based opportunities, he said every effort is being made to support deserving youth in sports and education.
The CEC congratulated both RLC Baroo and Poyen for their performances and commended all participants for contributing to the success of the tournament.
Medals, trophies, mementoes and cash prizes were distributed among winning teams, runners-up, participants and officials associated with the event. The vote of thanks was presented by the Deputy Superintendent of Police Headquarters, who acknowledged the support of the Football Association Kargil, Kargil Press Club, Information Department and other stakeholders.
Among those present were DySP Headquarters Inayatullah, DSP Security Syed, DySP DAR Tundup Dorjay, SHO Kacho Sadat and other officers of District Police Kargil. The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and a renewed focus on promoting sports culture and youth empowerment across the district.
