Gautam Singhania, 59, Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, was reportedly injured when a speedboat carrying seven people capsized off the Felidhoo region in the Maldives late Thursday night. The vessel was carrying Singhania, national rally driver Hari Singh, three other Indian men, a woman from the UK, and a Russian woman. Several passengers were rescued, but two Indians are still missing as search operations continue.
Singhania sustained minor injuries in the accident and was airlifted to Mumbai, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His spokesperson said, “Gautam Singhania suffered minor injuries following an unfortunate accident. He is recovering under due care in Mumbai. We thank you for the wishes and pray for the well‑being of the affected friends.”
In addition to being one of India’s best‑known textile magnates, Gautam Singhania has featured in several high‑profile family disputes. His father, Vijaypat Singhania, alleged in his autobiography An Incomplete Life that he was mistreated by his son and that there was a bitter conflict over family properties. Singhania was earlier married to Nawaz Modi, who accused him of physical abuse and later filed a domestic‑violence case; their daughter, Niharika, has also been part of the public fallout.
Despite the controversies, Singhania remains a central figure in the Raymond Group, having diversified the company into multiple sectors while continuing to project the legacy of one of India’s most prominent textile brands.
