NEW DELHI, OCT 7: Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and their supporters for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhawan premises without permission during the Opposition’s protest against the Election Commission on October 6.
According to police officials, the FIR was registered following a complaint alleging that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, other Congress leaders and accompanying MPs entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises without authorisation.
The two Congress leaders were among around 260 people detained on Tuesday after an INDIA bloc protest march towards the Election Commission was stopped by police. The protesters subsequently held a sit-in inside the Akashvani Bhawan premises that continued for more than eight hours.
The Opposition parties were protesting against alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They also raised allegations of “vote chori”.
Delhi Police said the INDIA bloc parties had planned to march from Parliament House to the Election Commission office on Tuesday. However, according to police, no application seeking permission for the march was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, and no permission had been granted.
The registration of the FIR comes a day after the Opposition’s protest, escalating the political confrontation between the Congress-led Opposition and the authorities over the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral roll revision exercise.
