New Delhi, October 28: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that the Tata Group was being “criminally destroyed” and criticised business leaders for remaining silent over the issue.
Gandhi’s remarks come amid an ongoing dispute over the leadership of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, which has reportedly created divisions among trustees and members of the company’s board.
Earlier this week, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata challenged the resolution to reappoint N Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons. The resolution had been passed at the holding company’s board meeting on September 17.
In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that the Tata Group was facing deliberate damage and questioned why business leaders were not speaking out.
“Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?” he wrote.
The Congress leader also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of treating Indian businesses as their personal property.
“Indian business is not Narendra Modi and Amit Shah’s plaything,” Gandhi said, adding that his party would work to ensure accountability.
“You lack courage. We don’t. We will ensure justice for these crimes,” he said.
There was no immediate response from the government or the Tata Group to Gandhi’s allegations.
The leadership dispute at Tata Sons has drawn attention to the governance of one of India’s largest business conglomerates, as questions continue over its leadership and the relationship between the group’s key stakeholders.
