Kargil, Apr 17: In a focused academic engagement at the University of Ladakh’s Kargil Campus, students of agriculture and horticulture were introduced to emerging geospatial technologies that are reshaping farming practices in high-altitude regions.
The lecture, delivered by noted geospatial expert Prof. V C Jha, brought into perspective the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), drones, and India’s NavIC in enhancing agricultural outcomes in Ladakh’s rugged terrain.
Addressing students at the School of Horticulture Science and Technology (SHS&T), Prof. Jha underlined the relevance of terrain evaluation and geomorphological approaches in a region where farming is constrained by altitude, climate, and fragmented landholdings. He explained that geospatial systems allow precise mapping of land resources, enabling better planning and utilisation.
Particular emphasis was laid on the integration of drone technology and NavIC for real-time monitoring of crops, soil health assessment, and yield estimation. These tools, he noted, offer farmers the ability to respond promptly to changing field conditions, thereby improving efficiency and reducing resource wastage.
The session also highlighted how satellite-based navigation systems can assist in accurate field measurements and irrigation planning, especially in areas where traditional methods fall short due to difficult terrain.
Faculty members present at the session described the lecture as an important academic exposure for students preparing to work in mountain agriculture systems, where technology-driven interventions are increasingly shaping cultivation practices.
The interaction concluded with discussions on adapting these tools to local conditions, with students showing keen interest in applying geospatial techniques to address the specific challenges of farming in Ladakh.
