Kargil: The University of Ladakh took a decisive stride towards practical agricultural education with the inauguration of a new poultry unit at its School of Agricultural Science and Technology (SAST), Kargil campus. The facility was formally inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha on November 4, in the presence of the Dean, Dr. Faizan.
The poultry unit has been set up to strengthen hands-on learning and foster entrepreneurial skills among B.Sc. Agriculture students, particularly those enrolled in the Skill Enhancement Course on Poultry Management. The initiative aims to expose students to the commercial and technical aspects of poultry farming — an emerging avenue for livelihood in the cold-arid region of Kargil.
Commending the team behind the project, Prof. Kushwaha appreciated the efforts of Dr. Faizan and course instructor Dr. Bilquees Fatima for their commitment in developing the unit. He interacted with third-semester students, encouraging them to link theoretical learning with practical experience and to explore opportunities in agri-based enterprises suited to Ladakh’s unique climatic conditions.
Highlighting the region’s untapped potential in poultry farming, the Vice Chancellor noted that practical exposure was crucial for developing sustainable agricultural practices and self-reliant graduates.
The event concluded with an acknowledgment of the joint efforts of faculty and students in realizing the project, underlining the university’s growing focus on skill-oriented agricultural education.
