New Delhi, Dec 28: President Droupadi Murmu undertook a submarine sortie at the Karwar naval base in Karnataka on Sunday, becoming only the second President to embark on such a naval operation, officials confirmed.
The President, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, boarded INS Vaghsheer, a Kalvari class submarine, accompanied by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.
This marks President Murmu’s maiden sortie aboard a Kalvari class submarine and represents only the second time in Indian history that a sitting President has undertaken such a mission. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam was the first to embark on a submarine sortie during his tenure.
The sortie at INS Kadamba, India’s largest naval base on the western coast, underscores the President’s engagement with the country’s maritime defense capabilities and the strategic importance of India’s submarine fleet in national security.
