PM Modi speaks to Israel PM Netanyahu to discusses West Asia Situation

New Delhi, March 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, March 2, 2026, as tensions in West Asia reached a boiling point. The discussion centered on the rapidly deteriorating regional security landscape, with Modi conveying India’s deep concerns over the latest developments and underscoring the paramount importance of safeguarding civilian lives.

In a post on the social media platform X, Modi detailed the exchange: “Had a telephone call with PM Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current regional situation. Conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments and emphasised the safety of civilians as a priority. India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities.” This statement reflects India’s consistent foreign policy approach of advocating de-escalation, dialogue, and humanitarian priorities in conflict zones.

The call comes in the immediate aftermath of dramatic military actions that have heightened fears of a broader conflagration across the Middle East. Over the weekend, the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on key Iranian targets, culminating in the confirmed killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—a figurehead whose death marks a seismic shift in the region’s power dynamics. Khamenei’s assassination, reportedly carried out via precision airstrikes, has been hailed by some as a blow to Iran’s hardline leadership but decried by others as a provocative act risking all-out war.

In swift retaliation, Iran unleashed a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting Israeli territory as well as several neighboring West Asian countries. Air raid sirens echoed across multiple nations, with reports of intercepted projectiles and minor impacts underscoring the precarious balance of deterrence in the area. These exchanges have disrupted global energy markets, with oil prices spiking amid concerns over potential disruptions to key shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz.

This is not Modi’s first intervention in the unfolding crisis. On Sunday night, he spoke directly with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, strongly condemning recent attacks on the Gulf nation. “India stands in solidarity with the UAE in these difficult times,” Modi affirmed, highlighting the strong bilateral ties that have deepened through economic partnerships, defense cooperation, and people-to-people connections. The UAE, a vital Indian trading partner and host to millions of Indian expatriates, has been on high alert amid the spillover effects of the Iran-Israel hostilities.

India’s diplomatic outreach underscores its balanced position in West Asia: maintaining robust relations with Israel—bolstered by defense and technology collaborations—while nurturing strategic partnerships with Gulf states like the UAE and Iran. As a major importer of energy from the region, New Delhi has a vested interest in stability, having previously mediated in similar flashpoints and championed two-state solutions in related conflicts.

Observers note that Modi’s emphasis on civilian safety aligns with India’s global advocacy for humanitarian norms, as seen in its UN interventions and aid shipments to conflict zones. With world leaders closely monitoring the situation, New Delhi’s proactive engagement positions it as a potential voice for restraint amid the escalating rhetoric from involved parties.

Developments are unfolding rapidly, with international calls for emergency UN Security Council meetings gaining traction. India, as a non-permanent member until recent rotations, continues to monitor the crisis closely.
