NEW DELHI, APR 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reiterated that his government has always prioritised women’s empowerment in every form and said that with the Women’s Reservation Act — the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam — India is moving towards greater women‑led governance.
In an X post reacting to an article by Union Minister Annpurna Devi on “Enhancing women’s legislative leadership”, Modi said representation must translate into real influence. “The government has always prioritised Nari Shakti in every form. Hence, with the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam laying the foundation, India is moving towards greater women‑led governance. This is also a key pillar of Viksit Bharat!”
The Women’s Reservation Act, passed by Parliament in 2023, provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies through a constitutional amendment. It will come into effect after the delimitation exercise, but the Prime Minister has announced an extension of the Budget session from April 16 to 18 to amend the law for possible implementation from 2029, or even earlier if another constitutional amendment is brought in.
Modi has also urged all political parties to support the measure with an open mind, calling it an issue of women’s empowerment and asking them to “become partners in winning the trust of the country’s mothers and sisters.”
