NEW DELHI, Sept 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to late Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal on his birth centenary, recalling his role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and his work on social unity, education and community service.
In a signed article published in newspapers, Modi said Singhal had a clear belief that society should remain harmonious and that the message of brotherhood needed to be reaffirmed.
The Prime Minister said any account of Singhal’s public life would remain incomplete without mentioning his role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. He recalled Singhal’s address at the Boat Club rally in 1991 and referred to his participation in the movement.
Modi said the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya was made possible through the efforts of several people involved in the movement, including Singhal.
He also highlighted Singhal’s emphasis on social equality and dignity, recalling his association with initiatives involving marginalised communities.
According to Modi, Singhal travelled extensively to remote and tribal areas and was involved in relief efforts following natural disasters, including the 2001 Kutch earthquake.
Singhal, born on September 27, 1926, was closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and later served as a prominent VHP leader. Modi recalled his organisational work and his association with the Sant Samaj.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Singhal’s interest in education, particularly Vedic education, and music. He noted Singhal’s association with the Ekal Vidyalaya initiative and recalled his singing during organisational meetings.
Modi also recalled Singhal’s involvement in international Hindu conferences, including events held in the United States in 1993 and Trinidad and Tobago in 2000.
Marking the birth centenary, Modi called for greater efforts to acquaint younger generations with Singhal’s life and legacy.
