NEW DELHI DEC 14 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday strongly condemned the “ghastly” terrorist attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach and expressed solidarity with Australia, saying India has “zero tolerance towards terrorism.”
In a statement from New Delhi, Modi denounced the attack, which targeted people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. He offered “sincere condolences” on behalf of the people of India to the families of those killed and said India supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar also condemned the Bondi Beach shooting, calling it a terror attack on Hanukkah celebrations. He said the thoughts of the Indian government and people were with the victims and their families.
At least 11 people were killed and 16 others injured in the mass shooting at the popular Sydney beachfront, according to officials. New South Wales Police said the incident, which prompted a major emergency response and warnings to avoid the area, has been declared a terrorist attack.
Authorities said one of the gunmen was killed, while the other was arrested but remains in critical condition. The shooting occurred near a children’s playground where a Hanukkah event, “Chanuka by the Sea 2025,” organised by Chabad of Bondi, was scheduled with music, entertainment and family activities.
