Leh, Mar 27: Eliezer Joldan Memorial College on Friday hosted a commemorative programme to mark 150 years of “Vande Mataram,” drawing wide participation from students and faculty in a display of patriotic engagement and academic reflection.
The event was organised jointly by the Department of Political Science and the Department of History under the patronage of Principal Professor Stanzin Yangdol. The programme was coordinated by Assistant Professor Zuhoor Hussain, Head of the Department of Political Science, and Assistant Professor Amjad Khan, Head of the Department of History.
A central feature of the observance was the active involvement of students across semesters, who led a collective recitation of “Vande Mataram.” The rendition, led by students including Nurboo Zangpo, Dechen Lhamo, Sonam Lhamo, Dasal Dolker and Irfan Khan, reflected a shared sense of cultural awareness and engagement with the country’s historical legacy.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Professor Zuhoor Hussain delivered a keynote lecture outlining the historical origins and role of “Vande Mataram” during India’s freedom movement. He described the song as a unifying force that inspired collective action and fostered a sense of national consciousness during a critical phase of history. He also called upon students to uphold the values of unity, democratic principles and inclusive development in present times.
The programme witnessed attendance from faculty members across departments, administrative staff and a large number of students. The organisers stated that the initiative was intended not only as a ceremonial observance but also as an opportunity to encourage reflection on the cultural and historical relevance of the national song.
The event concluded with a sense of renewed commitment among participants, as the college community engaged in a collective acknowledgement of the enduring legacy associated with “Vande Mataram.”
