Leh/Jammu, Jun 26 : A Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, met Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena to discuss the Union Territory’s key challenges, including environmental concerns, water scarcity and border security.
The meeting took place on Thursday as part of the committee’s four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to assess strategic border security and foreign policy issues.
In a post on X on Friday, LG Saxena described the interaction as “engaging and fruitful,” saying the committee sought detailed information on Ladakh’s major challenges and the initiatives being undertaken to address them.
During the meeting, Saxena briefed the panel on the region’s fragile ecosystem, the growing challenge of water scarcity and ongoing environmental concerns. He highlighted initiatives such as Project Him Sarovar, the construction of rock check dams under the Sindhu Jal Samridhi Abhiyan, and large-scale plantation drives aimed at improving water conservation and ecological sustainability.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, the committee appreciated these efforts and assured full cooperation.
The parliamentary panel visited Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil and Leh during its tour to gain first-hand insights into border management, India-China and India-Pakistan relations, and the overall security situation along the country’s frontier regions.
Earlier this month, members of the 8th Central Pay Commission also visited Leh to interact with employees’ unions and address grievances of Union Territory administration employees.
