New Delhi, Apr 24 : Opposition parties on Friday submitted a fresh notice in the Rajya Sabha seeking a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, sources said. The notice, signed by 73 Rajya Sabha MPs against the threshold of 50, cites “continued partisan asymmetry in the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct” and other constitutional concerns.
The opposition has accused the Election Commission of not acting on complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “address to the nation” on April 18, ahead of the West Bengal and Tamil Nadu assembly polls, pointing out that the CEC has issued no show‑cause notice, advisory, or public response to the grievances. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and TMC’s Sagarika Ghose are among those who handed the notice to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General.
The move follows earlier removal notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, also targeting the CEC, which were rejected by Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on the grounds that the allegations, even if presumed true, did not meet the constitutional bar of “misbehaviour”.
