Jammu, Mar 29: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday flagged off the first-ever international marathon in Jammu and also joined the run, marking a significant step towards promoting sports and tourism in the region.
The marathon began from Maulana Azad Stadium and saw enthusiastic participation from athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and local residents from different parts of the Union Territory.
Adding to the event’s appeal, actor Milind Soman and actress Gul Panag also took part in the marathon, encouraging greater public participation and enthusiasm.
The event was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department as part of its efforts to establish Jammu as a destination for major sporting events and outdoor activities.
Participants, including several international runners, welcomed the initiative. A runner from Kenya said, “The race was good, but the weather was a challenge. Since this is the first edition, it is a good beginning. The organisers can make it even better next time.”
Many locals also described the marathon as a positive and encouraging initiative, saying such events not only promote fitness and healthy living but also help bring communities together and strengthen the region’s tourism potential.
