NEW DELHI, Feb 3: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) raised alarm Tuesday over chronic newsprint shortages, with domestic production covering just 40% of demand and forcing heavy reliance on imports.
India consumes about 1.2 million tonnes annually, but local mills produce under 0.5 million tonnes—a gap persisting for over two decades with no major capacity expansion, INS stated.
Publishers must import to maintain supply for public discourse, highlighting the industry’s “hollowing out.”
