New Delhi, Oct 17: All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora was released early Saturday morning, while Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke is scheduled to be produced before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court, Delhi Police said.
The two were taken into preventive custody on Friday ahead of the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest march planned at Connaught Place in the national capital.
According to police, Bora was released after completing the formalities related to her detention under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. Dipke, meanwhile, was arrested in a fresh case related to an alleged breach of peace under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Police sources said the SEM court would decide whether Dipke should be released on bail or face further custody.
Dipke had also been detained at the airport on October 10, when a separate breach-of-peace case was registered against him. He was subsequently made to sign a bond undertaking not to disturb public peace for one year.
After her release, Bora criticised the Delhi Police and the BJP-led government at the Centre, describing the detentions as illegal. She demanded the immediate release of all detained protesters, including Dipke, and called for an end to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Bora also demanded the resignation or impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for legal action against him.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Bora alleged that she had been detained at Mandi House and kept at a police station until around 5 AM. She questioned the legality of the detentions and accused the authorities of using such measures against protesters.
The AISA president further alleged that detained protesters were being moved between locations and released the following morning or evening. She also called for restrictions affecting central Delhi to be lifted.
According to police sources, Bora was detained at Mandi House, while Dipke was detained at Jhandewalan on Friday as they were heading towards Connaught Place.
AISA claimed that Bora was moved between different locations across Delhi for around five hours before being taken to the RK Puram police station. The organisation also alleged that lawyers who reached the police station around midnight were not allowed to meet her and that police did not clarify her release time or provide her prescribed medicines despite her reported illness.
Police, meanwhile, said around 150 people were detained to maintain law and order and ensure smooth traffic movement during the proposed protest.
Security was tightened around Central Park in Connaught Place, with Rapid Action Force personnel deployed inside the area and additional security forces stationed nearby.
The developments come amid protests over the SIR process, with demonstrators demanding changes to the exercise and raising concerns about the conduct of the authorities.
