GLASGOW, Aug 1: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw, while Yashvir Singh produced a stunning final effort to claim bronze as India finished with two medals in the event at the Commonwealth Games.
Competing in challenging cold and windy conditions, the 28-year-old Chopra registered a season-best throw of 85.83 metres in his second attempt to finish second on the podium. The effort surpassed his previous season’s best of 85.69 metres, recorded at the Doha Diamond League in June.
Making his Commonwealth Games debut, 24-year-old Yashvir Singh delivered the performance of his career with a personal best throw of 85.41 metres on his sixth and final attempt. The remarkable effort lifted him from seventh place to third, earning him the bronze medal. His previous personal best stood at 83.72 metres.
India’s third entrant, Rohit Yadav, finished seventh with a best throw of 81.56 metres.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the gold medal with an impressive throw of 89.75 metres, achieved in his second attempt. Pathirage, who also owns a season and personal best of 92.62 metres, was the only athlete this season to breach the 90-metre mark.
Defending Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan failed to advance beyond the first three rounds after managing a best throw of 77.41 metres.
