Srinagar, June 4 : The National Conference (NC) on Wednesday announced that its legislature party, along with allies, will stage a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, demanding the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and constitutional safeguards.
The announcement was made by party chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq after a detailed meeting of NC legislators, allied CPI(M) members, and independent MLAs, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Sadiq said the delegation comprising MPs, MLAs, and allies would travel to Delhi to raise their demand for the return of statehood and related constitutional protections. He added that the leadership intends to engage with stakeholders in the national capital to push for the restoration of powers “taken away” from the region.
The meeting, which covered governance, development, drug abuse, economic concerns, and regional issues across Jammu, Kashmir, Pir Panjal, and Chenab, was described by party leaders as constructive.
Earlier, MLAs attended an off-site review meeting at Dachigam National Park, a move the Chief Minister said was pre-planned to assess governance over the past 19 months. He dismissed speculation around secrecy, stating the arrangements were made in advance.
The gathering also came amid political claims from the opposition about possible instability in the ruling camp, which NC leaders rejected, asserting unity within the alliance.
NC leaders reiterated that their focus remains on public welfare and the restoration of statehood. Questions regarding cabinet expansion were declined, with party representatives stating it remains the Chief Minister’s prerogative.
