KARGIL : Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil, under the University of Ladakh, on Friday completed the 12th consecutive day of its “Khat Bachao Abhiyan”, concluding the second week of a district-wide campaign focused on soil health management, balanced fertilizer use and sustainable farming practices.
Launched on June 1, the initiative forms part of a nationwide effort to conserve soil fertility and promote environmentally responsible agriculture. Over the past 12 days, KVK scientists have reached several villages, including Darchiks and Garkon in the Aryan Valley, engaging hundreds of farmers through awareness programmes, field demonstrations and interactive sessions.
During the outreach, scientists highlighted the importance of soil testing, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), organic manures, bio-fertilizers and natural farming techniques to sustain long-term soil productivity and reduce dependence on chemical inputs. Farmers were also sensitised to the environmental and economic consequences of excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Practical demonstrations on compost preparation, vermicomposting, Jeevamrit and efficient nutrient management were conducted to encourage adoption of low-cost, climate-resilient farming practices suited to the region’s conditions.
Interactive sessions enabled farmers to raise concerns related to soil fertility, pest infestation and crop productivity, with experts offering scientific solutions and technical guidance.
The campaign witnessed active participation from farmers and farm women across the district.
Dr. Nasreen Fatima Kacho, Head, KVK Kargil, said the initiative seeks to equip farmers with knowledge and affordable solutions that improve productivity while reducing crop losses. “Reaching remote areas is central to our mandate. Continuous field presence builds trust and ensures timely interventions where they matter most,” she said.
KVK Kargil said it would continue its extension activities under the campaign to strengthen sustainable agriculture and farmer awareness across the district.
