BISHKEK, Aug 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for an immediate end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to move from “endless war to the end of war” and stressing that a peaceful resolution remains a shared priority for humanity.
Modi made the remarks during a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
The Prime Minister said every day of the conflict pushes humanity backwards and reiterated India’s support for all efforts aimed at restoring peace.
“India, the land of Gandhi and Buddha, supports all efforts towards peace and will continue to do so,” Modi said, underlining New Delhi’s consistent advocacy of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
The meeting also covered a range of bilateral and international issues, with the two leaders holding detailed discussions on ongoing cooperation between India and Russia.
According to the discussions, trade and investment were among the key areas reviewed, along with energy security and fertiliser supplies.
Modi’s appeal comes amid continued fighting between Russia and Ukraine, with India maintaining that lasting peace can be achieved through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
The meeting on the sidelines of the SCO summit is part of ongoing high-level engagement between India and Russia, with both sides seeking to strengthen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors.
