SRINAGAR, MAR 24: A moderate earthquake jolted several parts of the Kashmir Valley this evening, causing widespread panic as residents rushed out of their homes into open spaces.
The tremors, which lasted for several seconds, were felt across the capital city of Srinagar and neighboring districts including Budgam, Ganderbal, and Baramulla.
While the exact magnitude is currently being assessed by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), early reports suggest the tremors were strong enough to rattle windows and move furniture, prompting many to stay outdoors for fear of aftershocks.
Local authorities have confirmed there are no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage from any part of the Valley.
In several congested areas of Srinagar’s old city, people were seen reciting prayers in the streets, a common sight in this seismically active region.
The Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to remain calm, avoid using elevators, and stay away from old or dilapidated buildings for the time being.
Kashmir is situated in Seismic Zones IV and V, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Today’s tremors serve as a stark reminder of the 2005 earthquake that caused massive devastation in the region. Seismologists often note that the Himalayan region is under significant tectonic stress, leading to frequent minor and moderate quakes.
Following the tremors that rattled the Kashmir Valley yesterday, the Disaster Management Authority has released a comprehensive safety checklist for residents.
With the region sitting in high-risk seismic zones, officials are urging the public to familiarize themselves with these life-saving protocols to ensure preparedness for any future aftershocks or seismic activity.
