Srinagar: Leader of Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir, Sunil Sharma, has launched a sharp attack on the ruling dispensation, demanding that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah resign on moral grounds over alleged violations of ethical and electoral norms.
Sharma, while addressing the ongoing Assembly session, accused the Deputy Chief Minister of behaving more like a performer than a legislator, stating that such conduct demeans the dignity and decorum of the House. He asserted that the dramatics displayed during the proceedings undermine public trust and divert attention from the core issues facing the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Opposition leader further alleged that Omar Abdullah breached the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing the establishment of a temporary campus of the National Law University in Budgam while the code was in force. Terming the act a “clear violation of electoral principles,” Sharma said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will file a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India seeking appropriate action.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly emphasized the urgent need for greater accountability, ethics, and discipline among its members. Legislators were urged to engage in meaningful debate and constructive dialogue, focusing on public welfare, development, and transparent governance rather than theatrics and political posturing.
The House also condemned violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and called for strict action against officials and individuals found guilty of misconduct during the electoral process.
Sharma reaffirmed that the Opposition will continue to expose hypocrisy, double standards, and misuse of power, ensuring that the dignity and democratic ethos of Jammu and Kashmir’s institutions remain intact.
“Those who have lost moral credibility must step down gracefully. It is time for all leaders to restore public faith in clean, accountable, and ethical politics,” Sharma concluded.
