Mumbai, August 31: Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Monday said the ongoing crisis in West Asia comes amid a period of significant strategic churn, with the maritime environment becoming increasingly contested.

He said threat perceptions are constantly evolving and emerging in newer forms, creating fresh challenges and adding to the complexity of the maritime security landscape.

Admiral Swaminathan was speaking in Mumbai after commissioning INS Nipun, a deep-sea diving vessel, into the Indian Navy.

The vessel is capable of supporting diving operations at depths of up to 300 metres and can undertake rapid submarine rescue missions. It can also be deployed for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance operations, officials said.

“We are living today through a period of significant strategic churn; the maritime environment is becoming increasingly contested,” Admiral Swaminathan said.

He emphasised the changing nature of maritime threats as geopolitical developments continue to reshape the regional and global security environment.
