SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) is set for a major organisational restructuring, with party insiders indicating that a formal announcement is likely to be made on December 5 — the death anniversary of party founder and iconic leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. The date, observed annually as a key political moment for the NC, is expected to serve as the platform for unveiling the party’s most extensive internal reshuffle in recent years.
According to highly placed sources, the restructuring aims to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence ahead of upcoming electoral challenges. The overhaul will include the induction of three new Additional General Secretaries, a move intended to decentralise decision-making and expand leadership bandwidth within the senior ranks.
In addition, the party is expected to appoint two more Provincial Presidents, one each for Kashmir and Jammu divisions, to streamline organisational work and improve regional outreach. The reshuffle is believed to be part of a broader strategy to counter the growing influence of rival parties, including the PDP, Apni Party, and BJP, particularly in competitive constituencies.
Significantly, the NC is also set to introduce new Segment Incharges in areas currently represented by Opposition and Congress MLAs. Sources said the party leadership has identified several such constituencies where focused, long-term organisational work is needed to reclaim political footing.
While NC leaders have so far maintained silence on the internal changes, the buzz within party circles suggests that the December 5 anniversary event — traditionally marked by renewed political messaging — will be used to project a stronger, more agile organisational structure as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle.
