LEH: The official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh has been renamed Lok Niwas, marking a move aimed at bringing governance closer to the public. Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta unveiled the new nameplate at the entrance of the complex today, following a Union Home Ministry directive issued on November 25, 2025, to adopt the new nomenclature for Raj Bhavans and Raj Niwas across the country.
The Administration described the step as a clear message that governance in Ladakh is intended to be accessible, responsive and directly aligned with citizen needs. Officials said the shift reflects a growing focus on transparency and accountability, with the Lt Governor’s residence now positioned as a hub for public interaction and administrative outreach.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the renaming reflects a renewed commitment to people-centric governance and inclusive development across the Union Territory. He noted that Lok Niwas would continue to function as the centre for policy planning and engagement with citizens, while strengthening outreach to both remote and urban communities.
He stated that the initiative supports efforts to empower local voices, simplify administrative processes and ensure equitable growth in Ladakh. According to him, the Administration remains focused on cultural preservation, welfare and economic upliftment as part of its broader vision for a Viksit Ladakh. Officials added that the new name underscores the government’s resolve to deepen public participation in decision-making and align its institutions more closely with the aspirations of Ladakh’s diverse population.
