Leh, Mar 28: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has directed that the District Hospital in Kargil be named after late Qamar Ali Akhoon, in a move intended to honour his long-standing contribution to public life and social welfare.
The decision, taken by the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh, follows a formal process of examination of records and recommendations, including inputs received from the General Administration Department.
Officials said the renaming seeks to preserve the legacy of Akhoon, whose public life was marked by an enduring commitment to service, integrity and community welfare. Announcing the decision, the Lieutenant Governor observed that associating a key public institution with Akhoon’s name would help ensure that his ideals continue to inform and inspire public life in the region.
Akhoon, who was widely respected across Ladakh, devoted his life to public causes, with particular emphasis on the welfare of disadvantaged sections of society. Known for his personal austerity and principled conduct, he worked consistently towards social upliftment, including efforts in education and community development in Kargil and adjoining areas.
According to official accounts, he remained unmarried and dedicated himself entirely to public service. His public life, described as free from controversy, earned him regard across communities. His contributions are seen as having played a role in shaping the developmental trajectory of Kargil and the wider Ladakh region.
In its statement, the Administration said the decision reflects its intent to recognise individuals whose work has left a lasting imprint on society. It added that such measures are aimed at reinforcing values of public service and inspiring future generations.
The renaming of the District Hospital, a principal healthcare institution in Kargil, is expected to serve as a continuing reminder of Akhoon’s association with the region and his lifelong engagement with its people.
