LEH, May 27: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena said he held a candid discussion with climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk and Gitanjali Angmo following the ongoing dialogue process with the Union Home Ministry.
In a post on X, the LG said both sides agreed that a positive atmosphere should be maintained in Ladakh with regard to development initiatives and political dialogue.
The LG said he advised Wangchuk against promoting what he termed a “misleading and provocative narrative” that could negatively affect public discourse.
“Democratic expression must not be taken as license for fabricating falsehoods and rabble rousing,” the LG said, adding that Wangchuk acknowledged that comparing Ladakh’s situation with Manipur was an “error of judgement”.
The LG further said Wangchuk expressed uncertainty about the origins of the “Cockroach Party” and stated that he would study the motivations of its founders and reconsider his position if necessary.
Highlighting concerns over the impact of repeated protests and rallies, the LG said such activities could adversely affect tourism and economic activity in Ladakh, where tourism remains a major source of livelihood.
According to the LG, Wangchuk appreciated several recent development initiatives undertaken in the region, including the Him Sarovar project, restoration of the Igoo Phey Canal, construction of the Mahe-Topko Canal and large-scale plantation drives.
