LEH: Traffic Police and District Police on Friday launched a special joint enforcement drive against illegal parking and traffic violations across Leh town, issuing 75 challans on the first day of the campaign as authorities stepped up efforts to tackle growing congestion during the peak tourist season.
Officials said most of the challans were issued for wrong and unauthorised parking, which has emerged as a major contributor to traffic bottlenecks in busy commercial areas and key road corridors witnessing increased vehicular movement.
The enforcement campaign comes amid a surge in tourist arrivals and expanding commercial activity, factors that have placed additional pressure on the town’s road network. Police said the initiative is aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow, improving road safety and facilitating hassle-free movement for both residents and visitors.
Enforcement teams carried out intensive monitoring at major intersections, market areas and other congestion-prone locations. Apart from penalising vehicles parked in violation of traffic regulations, action was also taken against vehicles fitted with illegal black window films. Depending on the nature of the offence, both compound challans and court challans were issued.
According to officials, the drive produced immediate results, with noticeable improvement in traffic movement reported from several busy stretches that routinely experience congestion. Authorities described the campaign as part of a broader strategy to strengthen traffic discipline and address challenges arising from the increasing number of vehicles on district roads.
Police have appealed to motorists to comply with parking regulations and cooperate with enforcement agencies. Officials warned that the campaign will continue in the coming days and that strict action will be taken against violators to ensure safer roads and more efficient traffic management across Leh district.
