New Delhi/Leh, Aug 06: In a proud moment for Ladakh, artist Skarma Sonam Tashi has been conferred the National Award at the 64th National Exhibition of Art, hosted by the Lalit Kala Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The award ceremony took place on August 5 in New Delhi.
Tashi’s sculpture, titled “My Homeland – 3,” captured the jury’s attention for its evocative portrayal of Ladakh’s landscape and vernacular architecture. Crafted from recycled materials such as cardboard, paper mâché, and natural pigments, the piece weaves themes of ecological awareness with cultural identity, standing out for its innovative technique and environmental consciousness.
This marks the first time an artist from Ladakh has earned recognition at this national platform, placing the region on the country’s contemporary art map and drawing attention to its evolving creative scene.
The ongoing exhibition, held at the Lalit Kala Art Gallery in Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi, features a wide spectrum of works from across India, representing emerging and established talents. Art enthusiasts can visit the gallery daily from 11 AM to 7 PM until September 15 to view Tashi’s award-winning piece along with other selected works.
