Leh, Jan 6: In a significant policy shift, the Ladakh Power Development Department has issued directives mandating the conversion of all government department electricity connections to prepaid mode, marking a major transformation in the region’s power billing system.
The department has ordered that all government offices and departments currently operating on postpaid electricity connections equipped with smart meters must transition to the prepaid billing system. This new arrangement will come into effect from February 1, 2026.
The move is expected to bring greater accountability and transparency in power consumption across government establishments in the Union Territory. By shifting to prepaid meters, government departments will need to recharge their electricity connections in advance, similar to prepaid mobile phone services.
This transition applies exclusively to connections that already have smart meters installed, enabling real-time monitoring of electricity usage and automated prepaid functionality. The smart metering infrastructure will facilitate seamless implementation of the prepaid system across all government facilities.
The Power Development Department’s decision is likely aimed at improving revenue collection, reducing payment delays, and promoting judicious use of electricity in government offices. The prepaid system will also help eliminate billing disputes and ensure better financial discipline in power consumption.
All concerned government departments have been directed to make necessary arrangements and ensure compliance with the new billing mechanism ahead of the February 1 deadline. The department is expected to provide technical support and guidance during the transition period to ensure smooth implementation of the prepaid system across Ladakh.
