Leh, May 7: Urban public transport infrastructure in Ladakh is set for a major upgrade with the introduction of 30 Ladakhi Smart Bus Shelters that will combine modern passenger amenities with traditional local architectural design.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the project, which will be implemented by the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (SIDCO). The shelters will be built in Leh and are inspired by traditional Ladakhi Gonpa architecture.
At present, bus stops in Leh lack adequate shelter and modern facilities, especially to withstand extreme weather conditions. The new smart shelters aim to address these gaps by offering safer and more comfortable waiting spaces.
The proposed shelters will include GPS-enabled real-time bus tracking, 55-inch passenger information display systems, Wi-Fi connectivity, CCTV surveillance, SOS emergency buttons, charging points, seating arrangements, first aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders, and fire safety systems. They will also feature solar power systems to promote clean energy use.
Special design elements such as Shingtsak woodwork, traditional Pentsak painting, mud plastering, lime whitewashing, prayer wheel installations, and wall murals will reflect Ladakh’s cultural identity.
Key features include heated seating, thermally insulated structures, and wind-protected enclosures to provide relief during harsh winter conditions when temperatures drop significantly below freezing.
The initiative, conceptualised by LG Saxena, aims to improve public transport facilities, promote eco-friendly infrastructure, and encourage greater use of sustainable urban mobility in the high-altitude region.
