LEH: The Ladakh administration is exploring grid-based electrification of border posts in the Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, officials said.
The proposal, drawn up by the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), aims to extend grid connectivity to Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) posts stationed in the high-altitude DBO region, which hosts the world’s highest airstrip and serves as a crucial forward base for Indian forces.
The plan came to light during a high-level review meeting chaired by Prince Dhawan, Executive Director of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), to assess the progress of power sector initiatives across the Union Territory.
Dhawan lauded the move, noting the strategic importance of a dependable power supply for remote and sensitive border areas. He instructed officials to expedite necessary clearances and coordinate with relevant agencies for early execution of the electrification project.
During the meeting, Dhawan also reviewed the ongoing Border Area Package for Nubra and Changthang being implemented by turnkey contractor GEPDEC. He took stock of the upstream network development, the upcoming 220 kV transmission system in Nubra, and progress on the installation of smart meters across Ladakh.
The Executive Director conducted a detailed appraisal of the Unified Billing System (UBS) and the smart metering drive under the Special Development Package (SDP). He was briefed on LPDD’s proposal to install smart meters for the remaining 18,279 consumers yet to be covered under the scheme, which is awaiting final approval.
Officials said the proposed grid connectivity in DBO is expected to bolster energy security for troops deployed in extreme weather conditions, reducing dependence on diesel generators and ensuring round-the-clock power supply in one of the most remote corners of the country.
